Google's late-2025 local algorithm update did three concrete things: it heavily down-weighted obviously fake reviews, it gave more lift to businesses with consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data across the web, and it started rewarding response rate to reviews more aggressively.
What changed in November 2025
We saw three of our Chicago clients drop from positions one or two in the Map Pack to positions four or five overnight. Two of them recovered within six weeks once we cleaned up NAP inconsistencies on legacy directories. The third recovered after we systematically responded to one hundred and forty-two unanswered reviews.
The 14-step Map Pack checklist
Step one: claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. Every field. Every photo slot. Every category and attribute that applies.
Step two: pick a primary category that exactly matches what you do, and add up to nine secondary categories that capture adjacent services. Don't be greedy — irrelevant categories hurt.
Step three: write a description that uses your money keywords naturally, names your service area, and mentions your founding year and key differentiators.
Step four: upload at least twenty original photos. Storefront, interior, team, work product, before/after if applicable. Geotag them if you can.
Step five: post weekly Google Posts. Most businesses ignore this; it's a free signal.
Step six: audit NAP consistency across the top fifty citation sources for your industry. Yelp, BBB, your industry's verticals. Fix every variation.
Step seven: get reviews. Real reviews, from real customers, with real specifics. Aim for one new review per week minimum. Two per week is better.
Step eight: respond to every review within forty-eight hours. Thank positive reviewers by name. Address negative reviews professionally and offer to make it right.
Step nine: build out service-area pages on your website if you serve multiple Chicago neighborhoods. Each page should be substantively different — not the same content with the neighborhood name swapped.
Step ten: implement LocalBusiness schema with your address, hours, and service area.
Step eleven: get linked from local Chicago publications, trade associations, and Chamber of Commerce-style directories.
Step twelve: make sure your hours are accurate, especially around holidays. Inaccurate hours kill rankings.
Step thirteen: encourage Q&A on your GBP and answer them yourself.
Step fourteen: track your rank from multiple Chicago locations using a tool like Local Falcon. Map Pack rankings are hyperlocal — you can be number one in Logan Square and number eight in Andersonville for the same query.
What this looked like for a Lincoln Park dental practice
We started with the practice ranking in position six for "Lincoln Park dentist." After ninety days running this checklist end to end, they were in position one. Reviews went from forty-three to seventy-one. Booked calls from organic search increased by sixty-eight percent.
Nothing exotic. Just the checklist, run completely.
